Kelsy Karter is a singer song writer based in Los Angeles. Karter had an interesting publicity stunt catch fire earlier in the year with the release of “Harry” (Read Our Review HERE). Karter invoked the fake Harry Styles tattoo idea, which was his picture tattooed on the side of her face. The public reaction was huge globally, with everyone trying desperately to find out if the tattoo was real. It wasn’t. Karter continues to build her grass roots rock sound and riding a wave of momentum over the past months. She is now releasing a driving indie rock n roll track titled, “What U.” Karter co-wrote “What U” alongside the same team behind “Harry,” with Anthony Rossomando and Tony Esterly serving as collaborators. Rossomando has had an incredible few weeks, scooping up a Golden Globe, Grammy, and Oscar for his work on “Shallow” for the A Star Is Born.  “Harry” and “What U” are from Karter’s debut project, Songs For The Rocketship, which is set for release in March.

Positives:

Karter’s voice is solid, a little effected, but it fits the tune and indie rock sound. The songwriting is spot on and the guitar is crunchy.

Bottom Line:

“What U” begins with a catchy guitar figure that has a hip rhythm and will grab your attention. The slightly distorted vocal sound brings us the melody. A fun figure that has a nice shape and combination of long notes and eighth note figures. Karter’s vocal style is an enjoyable combination of punk and rock, with plenty of girl power attitude. The song form has nice variances and a melodic guitar solo, yes let’s bring more guitar solos back in to rock, especially indie rock! Karter says this about the tune, “After the Harry stunt, and all the hate that came my way, I wanted to release something that would show my fans that no matter what circumstances you’re faced with, or trouble you find yourself in, you gotta do you and be the best version of yourself
