Hailing originally from Australia, Andrew Phelan transplanted to Vancouver to deepen his creative process.  In this new home, he gained quick notoriety with the alt-folk band The River & The Road. This experience gave him the legs and confidence to take time for himself to develop what is his new album Everything Rattles When I Breathe.  The album was completed in only six sessions with Harley Small (Peach Pit) taking the engineering reigns,  mixed by Colin Stuart (Dan Mangan / The New Pornographers), and mastered by Stuart McKillop (The Pack A.D. / Comeback Kid). The album is an opus for Phelan a self-discovery deepened by the collection of songs that highlight and complement each other in their embodiment.

Positives:

An honest and vulnerable album, filled with stories of broken hearts and abused trust, running the emotional gamut of human life, triumphs, tears and joy.

Bottom Line:

Phelan draws from personal experience on Everything Rattles When I Breathe. His songs are honest and gripping. Lyrically, each song takes the listener through a journey of being homesick, love-sick and the pain of death the renewal of youth. Vocally Phelan has a ringing voice that espouses lyrics that empower and touch a deeper part of your soul. Phelan explains, “I wrote these to give to people, they were written during touring moments, and travelling home to Australia, and finding my feet in Canada. They were recorded in a small room blocks from the crawl space I lived in when I first moved to Vancouver, with two close friends in a way that was most playable to a room of people.” Phelan’s folksy sound is engaging and uplifting. That’s the short of it!
