The Phoenix Project, Play It Twice Review

The Phoenix Project is fueled by two indelibly creative artists, singer/songwriter Robin Lyn Treger and keyboardist/songwriter Steve Starger. They dig deep into the richly flavored American roots well. Their debut EP Play It Twice is aptly titled, because after one listen you will find yourself going back to savor what is clearly represented by two fine craftsman of American roots music. Each track features a slightly different line up of players, but each have a sound communication and rapport.
Positives:
Treger has a soulful voice with a pleasing tonality that warms to the core. Play it Twice has a solid bluesy rock sound with the right amount of Americana, countrified soul. Gritty and filled with American life stories, that are relatable.
Bottom Line:
Each tune has its own shimmer. “(I Put My) Hand in the Fire” envelopes the heart of the Mississippi Delta blues with a down and dirty grit. While “Vagabond Heart” puts for a gorgeous waltz, which Treger lends her sweetly toned styling to. The title track mixes it up with drummer, Don Fitch adding a percussion flair to the track, while guitarist Tom Majesky creates a memorable hook line. It’s a bluesy romp that you will not be able to resist. A gorgeous moody ballad, “The Way It Was” that offers a reflective feeling of a short but welcomed listen. I look forward to watching what this fine group of musicians has to offer in the future. They are, ones to watch. That’s the short of it!
