KOYO is a U.K. based prog-psych rock band that has been expanding past the burgeoning music scene of their hometown of Leeds. Formed in 2015, KOYO is comprised of Huw Edwards (lead vocals, guitar), Jacob Price (sampling, synthesizers), Seb Knee-Wright (guitars), Dan Comlay (bass) and Tom Higham (drums). The five-piece band blends influences ranging from Ozric Tentacles and The Velvet Underground, to My Bloody Valentine and Kurt Vile. KOYO is full of hip riffs and song forms that will surprise and take you for a musical journey. The psychedelic elements of KOYO are equal to the progressive way the band presents their music with accuracy and intent. The band is releasing a new single on 88 Watt records titled, “Before.”

Positives:

KOYO is about song writing and creating different textures and feels that are combined to make a musical statement of interest and substance.

Bottom Line:

KOYO is bringing the sounds of prog-psych rock to life in “Before.” Starting with the dual guitar intro that builds to Edwards’ vocal entrance, the band instantly establishes and raw energy. With a booming bass line and a strong two and four beats, the form unfolds. The various sections are interesting and the way the guitar and synthesizers intertwin builds the interludes. The bridge is a nice relaxed change that is built back to the original feel. KOYO’s use of vocal harmonies is punctual to the music. KOYO is a band that is powerful, moving and are tastefully balanced between psychedelic rock and progressive rock. “Before” melds rock rhythms with a highly memorable and understandable melody in a meaningful way through the form. KOYO aptly brings a sophisticated sound to alternative rock, tying in the richness of their predecessors, while pushing out their own unique sound. That's the short of it!
