MXMS is a pop duet comprised of singer Ariel Levitan and pianist Jeremy Dawson. MXMS is short for “me and my shadow,” the duet is a dark electronic project that is self-described as, “Funeral Pop.” Which is based on the combination of music culture with conjugality of death positivity, darkness and honesty. MXMS was created when Levitan and Dawson met in Los Angeles, after Levitan moved from New York City in late 2013.  Harbored feelings and trauma each had hidden away for a lifetime floated to the surface in their studio. Each story, each moment in their lives they recorded into a lyric, a song, into a vision. Starting with the song “omg,” their dual documented story of a violent, toxic life was born. MXMS made a vow to create their art as naked as it needs to be to express the emotions they are conveying. MXMS is releasing a new single, “Paris.” Levitan says,  of the single,”Paris” is based on true events. Living with my then French boyfriend and bandmate in a flat in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, I experienced some of the best and worst times of my entire life. We were a modern-day French Sid & Nancy that sparkled so bright that the whole thing burned down faster than it started.”

Positives:

With a steady beat, MXMS takes us on journey with their lyrics and musical colors through solid songwriting.

Bottom Line:

“Paris” displays Levitan’s sexy vocals and Dawson’s solid production. Although self-described and ‘funeral pop,’ the music is still very clear and enjoyable. The melodies are memorable, and the low-key subtleness of the music is a part of the allure. The vocal harmonies in the latter part of the song adds interest, the developing lines of various instruments in the sections gives the song a sense of development. It is easy to get lost in the hypnotic rhythms and tones of Levitan’s vocal. As collaborators, MXMS has a signature sound that resonates in a pop fashion with very listenable melodies. That’s the short of it!
