High School friendships began in band class for this Kelowna, British Columbia (Canada) band. At that time, they did not realize that their vocations would be tied together at a later date. In high school, drummer Calen Trentini met bassist Spencer Daley, later adding their friend Adam Wilson. After high school, the trio went their separate ways before reconnecting in Vancouver as adults in 2015. CIVILIANA was formed a few months later with Trentini at the helm with his powerful voice and dynamic drumming skills anchored by Daley’s technical aptitude on bass and keys, along with Wilson’s supporting vocals and crafty songwriting. Adding another High School chum, Daniel Ponich (guitar, keys, percussion) while recording their first EP, Out the Window proved to be a winning sound. Ponich became a regular member of the band. On their latest endeavor, the group employed producer Ryan Worsley (Dear Rouge, Said The Whale, Sophia Danai), who along with co-producer Matt Di Pomponio with a series of singles. The first a spring release titled “Carry a Light,” and summer hot-ticket “Void”. With another single “Melt,” set for this fall.
Positives:
Trentini is a powerful vocalist, and his bandmates make the entire group sound an enjoyable listen. “Void” is a wonderful entre to the band’s impending EP.
Bottom Line:
The new single “Void,” offers a personal edict for Trentini, he explains, “This song reflects on a time where I found myself vehemently seeking a relationship – partly to address my loneliness but also to handle the intense pressure to conform with those around me who had found partners quickly and effortlessly. After rushing into a new relationship, I lost my identity and direction because I hadn’t taken time to find my own meaning and purpose.” That's the short of it!
