When thinking of coal mining, your mind immediately goes to West Virginia.  Not necessarily true.  Born in Brisbane, Australia to a coal mining father and a champion athlete mother, Kodey Brims spent her teens quietly exploring a variety of musical instruments and a passion for creative writing and drama. Landing a scholarship from Berklee College of Music in Boston would change this young musician’s trajectory dramatically.  Her first single “Out of My Hands,” is off her upcoming EP due to be released August 30. Recorded in Nashville, TN with Invisible Heroes.

Positives:

Brims has a Tori Amos depth to her lyrics; her piercing soprano high notes resonate with prodigious resonance.

Bottom Line:

Moving thousands of miles away from home was a time of joy, pain, love, heartbreak, and adventuresome wanderlust. The things great songs are made of. Brims takes full advantage of this theme in her songcraft. Her beautifully adorned voice is an excellent vehicle for her storytelling. Like Amos, her songs are filled with yearning and emote a brooding quality that instantly appeals. Brims has a strong grasp of her stylistic artistry. A blend of pop vocal melodies, folk guitar and lyrics filled with great depth, a winning combination. That’s the short of it!
