Blackberry Smoke, Find a Light Review 2

That great southern sound is alive and kickin’ with Blackberry Smoke. The Atlanta, Georgia band’s unique blend of Southern rock/country is a feast for the ears. The lineup consists of: Charlie Starr (lead vocals, guitar), Richard Turner (bass, vocals), Brit Turner (drums), Paul Jackson (guitar, vocals), and Brandon Still (keyboards). Blackberry Smoke has a new album hitting the airwaves, Find a Light.  The band’s sixth full-length studio album features 13 tracks written or co-written by lead singer and guitarist Charlie Starr. The album is self-produced and includes a lineup of all-star guests such as: Robert Randolph (on the track “I’ll Keep Ramblin’”), Amanda Shires (on “Let Me Down Easy”) and the Wood Brothers (on “Mother Mountain”). The music continues the bands special blend of bluegrass-infused Southern rock with solid grooves, great guitar playing and strong singing. That’s the short of it!

Positives:

Top-notch songwriting with a wide range of sounds and emotions. The playing and singing is inspired, and the special guests add to the already marvelous sound.

Bottom Line:

Blackberry Smoke’s Find a Light contains fine songwriting and performances. The dual guitar jamming from Starr and Jackson is always a treat to hear. The production sound is a little slick, with a lot of reverb, BBS sounds best with a closeup, raw sound. The band always delivers live, and Blackberry Smoke is one of the best bands out today that has that Southern rock sound. This band is all about catchy tunes with clever lyrics and great musicianship! Hey the formula must work, or we would not have classic rock stations that celebrate what is best about the Southern styled rock sound.
