Zoelly, Blowing Smoke Review 1

Sixteen-year-old, Toronto-based Zoe Katzberg, artistically know by her stage name Zoelly has a background in dancing and singing, but its her music that has her head and heart focused to the future. Zoelly explains: “From the moment I wake up, I’m thinking ‘what am I going to do that’s musical today?’”  A teen pop artist, Zoelly certainly enjoys time hanging with friends, or the regular activities that come with school, but she also diligently and professionally takes writing music seriously and makes way in her weekly schedule for intense rounds of songwriting and working on new music.  “What’s so exciting to me is ‘the unknown’,” Zoelly muses. “I love wondering where this journey is going to take me. Just knowing that my life is a ‘big book’ currently being written, and I am the writer,”says Zoelly.

Positives:

Zoelly has a voice well beyond her sixteen years of life. The vocal control she exhibits is warm and supple, while still maintaining a strong command technically and putting it to great use on “Blowing Smoke.”

Bottom Line:

Zoelly has a bright future in music, her lyrics are poignant and meaningful, and her voice is certainly prime time. On “Blowing Smoke,” Zoelly has captured the organic truth of teen life and framed it in a universal way that speaks to anyone who is heartsick and broken. “I wanted to give a real-life look into a reality of a teen’s relationship,” Zoelly shares. “I wanted to touch on the negativity and hurt that can be caused when one is getting carried away by one’s personal bad habit.” Though thematically based in her experiences as a teen, the lyrics certainly reach beyond a teen song, into a poised and powerfully moving narrative.
