Cassandra Maze originally from Coquitlam, BC, began her formal training with classical piano at the age of seven. By thirteen her love of songwriting blossomed, and guitar and ukulele became a part of her arsenal. She cut her teeth with live performances in coffee shops playing the 12-string guitar. As her journey continued, she returned to her roots in piano and began incorporating live looping into her music, layering multiple parts for a richer, more complex sound. Her determination has never ceased with song placement in the TV Showcase series, Eve of Destruction. She’s done vocal session work for Devin Townsend’s Ziltoid 2 album. She’s also played keyboards and sang backup vocals for Victoria Duffield and the Latency’s Brandon Lehti. Outdoor summer festivals, most notably the Vancouver Jazz Fest. Maze additionally placed in the Top 10 regional finals in CBC’s Searchlight Contest, among some of the best new voices in Canadian indie music.  In 2017 Maze released her debut EP, Velocity and now in 2018 her sophomore release Asymmetry just hit the streets on November 2, 2018.

Positives:

Maze has an electrifying voice, seasoned and polished. Her rhythm is focused and resonating.

Bottom Line:

Asymmetry is filled with sic beats and pumping dance floor anthems. The slinky “I Don’t Need Your Love,” has an infectious groove, while “Boom” will find you pulling those slick dance shoes out and running to dancefloor to shake that thang. “Made of Stars,” features a more introspective Maze, with a lyrically dazzling tune. Reminding us that we are made from a higher power than the moment. We are infinite. The final tune “Wasteland,” is an explosive feel-good pop anthem. Maze is on fire, her voice is commanding and warming. Her use of electronic effects is groundbreaking. The album overall features moments of total vulnerability in her lyrics, while at other times a pulsating wisdom of perfectionism and symmetry. That’s the short of it!
