A delightfully swinging Big Band is back at it again with their third full-length release On The Sunny Side. The Interplay Jazz Orchestra is a Long Island, New York based Big Band proving that great jazz resides beyond the Big Apple. Co-directed by trumpeter Gary Henderson and trombonist Joey Devassy, Interplay Jazz Orchestra performs original compositions and arrangements written by several members of the band. On The Sunny Side features writing by several members of the group including: Joey Devassy, Gary Henderson, Damien Pacheco, and Chris Scarnato. The album was recorded at The Bunker Studios in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Positives:
A deep sense of swing adorns the tracks of On The Sunny Side, a nice collection of varied tunes that each compliment the overall program.
Bottom Line:
Interplay Jazz Orchestra has enjoyed a celebrated success with their previous albums My Love You’re Free and in particular, Detour. On the Sunny Side takes that fanfare a step forward with articulately written pieces, played by an equally apt ensemble in the Big Band idiom. Their counterpoint is fluid and their ideas intuitive. Its easy to spot this is a working ensemble, their charts are tightly woven and focus on the finer points of the arrangements, and most notable is their sense of swing and lively solos. That’s the short of it!
