Michael O. is a singer, songwriter, performer and producer that creates music that reflects his personal and cultural influences to create a powerful world music sound. Born New York City and raised in Portland, Maine. Michael’s upbringing fused American, African American, and Nigerian cultures to create the multi-faceted artist he is today. This influence allowed him to win second place on NBC’s “The Sing Off.” With over 6.5 million viewers weekly, Michael wowed audiences and was even dubbed “incredible” and “timeless” by Ben Folds of Ben Folds Five, and “a freaking superstar” by Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman. He appeared in the major motion picture, Pitch Perfect 2, as the lead singer of the singing group in the film, The Singboks, soloing on the song “Anywhere You Want It.” He was also featured on the soundtrack, which won an American Music Award for best soundtrack. Both the film and soundtrack were #1 in May of 2015.

Through his music, Michael aims to build connections that break down ethnic, geographic, and cultural boundaries through his exploration of himself, his heritage, and of the world around him. Michael is a powerhouse performer.  His first EP, In the Beginning, within 24 hours of its official release, jumped to the top 5 on the iTunes R&B charts, and remained the best-selling EP in Northern New England an entire year. Michael is now releasing a single titled, “Do It For Love.” Michaels describes it as, “an ode to my ancestral country of Nigeria. This song is about how I make music for the love of the craft.”  Once again Michael lends his incredible talents to create a beautifully treated homage to his ancestors. That’s the short of it!

Positives:

Set to a modern Reggae beat, “Do It For Love” is a beautifully created lyrical song with Michael’s ample vocals leading the way.

Bottom Line:

Michael is proof the American melting pot is a success when we all act as people joined by love of our country, our unique heritages and for one another. Through the power of the universal language, music, Michael sings of love on, “Do It For Love.” With a song form that is straight ahead, Michael sings the melody with an infectious accent. The production is top-shelf and offers varied sounds that float in and out to strengthen the track and keep interest. Michael makes good use of vocal harmonies too, as they punctuate phrases and fill out the song. With a mix of electronic and hip hop, Michael combines them with Reggae in a way that is enjoyable and musical. Combined with his nimble voice, “Do It For Love,” is a fitting tribute.
