Are there moments when musical partners find each other in the grand plan of the cosmos. In the case of The Western Den, their wonderfully charismatic story is that of music fairy tales. Deni Hlavinka, a pensive pianist from small town Virginia, posted a song idea on a college forum for accepted students. Chris West, an eager guitarist from Bermuda, sent back the song the following day in finished form. Upon meeting in person, they discovered their bond musically was like-minded. There was never a discussion of forming a band, never a conscious choice, it was just implied. It was the meeting of two forces destined to create together. Seven years later the duo is set to release their first full length release titled A Light Left On. Until then we can enjoy their latest single “Like You Do.”
Positives:
The duo focuses delicately sequenced orchestral sounds that belie the chordally complex signatures. Their sweetly hued vocal harmonies are unmistakably ethereal.
Bottom Line:
"Like You Do" is a stirring example of The Western Den’s contemplative move from the folk labeling to a blend of risk-taking production choices and well-conceived songcraft, tied together with the chemistry and bond of the co-leaders for an emboldened sound. Their new directive is a virility of their collaboration and the desire to reach beyond with mature aesthetics and command with a foundational securing of beauty and empirical creativity. That’s the short of it!
