Shawn Colvin is a three-time Grammy winner, who swept the hearts of the music industry with her  1989 debut, Steady On. The following spring, Colvin took home the GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Folk Album, lending the crossover legitimacy to a genre at times overlooked. As the record’s 30th anniversary looms, Colvin is reimagining her breakthrough release for her longtime fanbase to reminisce, but also adding in a spice for the next generation to discover her music. The acoustic anniversary edition of Steady On was recorded at Austin’s Arlyn Studios with head engineer Jacob Sciba (Steve Earle, Dierks Bentley, Willie Nelson), mixed by Simon Tassano and mastered by Emily Lazar.

Positives:

Colvin illuminates a stripped-down sound. Her voice is seasoned with maturity and a deeper sense of knowing.

Bottom Line:

Colvin is not creating a recapitulation of her songs; it is her desire to deepen and celebrate the songs that catapulted her career. Steady On, has a relevance in the fabric of modern society that has touched many artists and listeners in a 30-year span, even Colvin herself. Colvin explains, “I was 32 years old, and the dream of my life had been fulfilled,” Colvin says, “not only because I made an album but mostly because I had written or co-written every song, an accomplishment that was hard won. I was so proud. My feeling was then—and still is—that if I never made another album, Steady On would have been enough.” Her pensive revalidation of her classic songs offers an opportunity to excavate a hued depth of maturity that pays homage to the heritage of a remarkable canon of work by Colvin. That’s the short of it!
