Clutch, Book of Bad Decisions Review 2

Maryland is the nation’s leader in the production of blue crabs and soft clams. Marylanders are known for eating copious amounts of crab from the Chesapeake Bay. Also, Maryland is the home of rock band Clutch. The rockers devour fifteen songs on their new album titled, Book of Bad Decisions. The band is Neil Fallon on vocals and guitar, Tim Sult on guitar, Dan Maines on bass and Jean-Paul Gaster on drums. The band traveled to Nashville to record the album and Vance Powell produced it at Sputnik Sound. For those who haven’t heard this band, they are a four-piece rock band that consistently put out rich melody driven music that is notable and spiced with blues attitude. Book of Bad Decisions is no exception, it is melodic with esthetic guitar passages, laden with a driving beat that gives their music a great blend of attitude and accessibility. Keeping rock alive with great songs, and that’s the short of it!

Positives:

Fallon’s vocals are strong, and the songwriting is clever with indelible melodies and hooks. No frills, just good honest music, they stick with their sound, taking an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it attitude,” to a good end.

Bottom Line:

Clutch has given us another strong USA rock album in Book of Bad Decisions. This band is what we need, no candy pop tunes, just increasingly creative and straight-ahead rock tunes without compromising. The band has obviously put a large amount of love and focus on both songwriting and the memorable hooks of the music. On both ends of the spectrum the music takes us places and it never becomes a cliched joke, phony or any less critical to the overall structure of the album. So, in short, just let out the CLUTCH and let the Book of Bad Decisions roll!
