Angels and One-Armed Jugglers is Chris Barron’s solo project, but wait – do not worry, Barron has no intention of leaving the Spin Doctors. The album is meant to provide him an opportunity to explore musical avenues that would not fit with the Spin Doctors. Angels and One-Armed Jugglers features eleven originals by Barron. He worked alone with his guitar to write the material and has plans to tour support the album in a solo setting as well. However, on this recording, there is a full band backing Barron which features Saturday Night Live drummer Shawn Pelton, bassist Jesse Murphy and an array of NYC session players. Barron is singing again after his medical hiatus due to a paralyzed vocal cord. His songwriting is unique, and the music is varied, the short of it is, it’s good!
Positives: Barron writes music that is inline with music from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. What does that mean? Well, there is meaningful lyrics, strong hooks and much attention to the details of SONG WRITING!
Bottom Line: Barron’s songwriting approach follows the songs, he is a songwriter that is constantly trying to grow. Angels and One-Armed Jugglers gives us a chance to hear how he is changing and re-imagining songs while writing music with new and diverse styles, and themes.
