Debut artist Chirpy is a singer and producer that conjures dark, dream pop/indie-rock. Hailing from Dublin, Ireland Chirpy is a multi-instrumentalist. Her debut six-track EP, Real Life was released in June of 2017, and went straight to No. 1 on the Irish iTunes download charts. It also received widespread critical acclaim in the tastemaker sphere. Born Rebecca Shannon, she has been better known as a session musician (voice, guitar, bass, keys) and collaborator performing most notably with the Irish International set-up, Anúna. Chirpy has toured Ireland, the UK, Europe, the US and Asia as a singer and performer. Her self-titled debut full-length album was released in June of 2018, and was recorded in Dublin, London and Lucerne (Switzerland). Chirpy’s sound draws from a cross-pollination of sounds, with noticeable classical leanings coupled with contemporary electronica input.
Positives:
A dreamy ethereal sound, Chirpy has a hauntingly rich voice. Her songs realm in the mid to downtempo space. Well-crafted tunes garnish the album with great result.
Bottom Line:
Each track on Chirpy’s self-titled album takes the listener on a journey. The songs oscillate a stirring sound. Tunes like “All For Me,” invoke a plucking sound with celestial backing vocal adornment that strikes an unforgettable listen. While the droning keyboard sound of “Human Situation,” invokes bell tones to supplement the instrumentation, while Chirpy echoes the melody and depth of lyric. The brushing percussiveness of “Not Scared of the Outcome,” offers the most up-tempo number on the album. Once again, the crystalline falsetto of Chirpy swirls the track and drives its enjoyment. Overall, Chirpy is a coalesced listen that ties together cohesively a journey of well-crated tunes with multi-layers of the uncommon for a dreamy pop/indie-rock sound. That’s the short of it!
