Tall Heights is a duet comprised of vocalist Tim Harrington and Paul Wright that is pushing the boundaries of vocal duet collaborations. Tall Heights is releasing their much-anticipated sophomore album titled, Pretty Colors For Your Actions via Sony Music Masterworks. The duet chose to steer away from the production-heavy, synthetic palette of their 2016 album, Neptune. Choosing instead to record with a live band in-studio, and focusing on a core band sound and production of acoustic instruments and a rock solid rhythm section. The eleven-tracks contain the duo’s signature melodies, plus rich layers and sounds of live instrumentation and contemporary production to create a sonic universe all their own through various styles and feels.
Positives:
Tim Harrington and Paul Wright are exploring a range of musical influences and emotions, but all with their beautifully blended and perfectly phrased duet singing. Coupled with solid songwriting and an outstanding band.
Bottom Line:
Tall Heights is showing more of their organic side with the support of a live band, to good effect, Pretty Colors For Your Actions is a outstanding set of singing and playing through well-crafted songs. The production is full and balanced, with each instrument clearly heard. The duet’s vocals are rich and buzzing with emotional sonority. The lead single "The Deep End," is an upbeat selection clouded by a feeling of darkness, a conflict of emotions further explored in "Midnight Oil." The feel and emotions travel from hard-hitting ballads ("House on Fire" & "Not Like It Was") to hook-laden, synth-heavy numbers ("Oslo" & "White Frost") to sprawling jams ("Over Now") and philosophical trips ("Roanoke"). All the tracks have an energy that is tactile from the live band, the duets vocal quality is spinning with prowess and adroit tonality. That's the short of it!
