Suzy Callahan, Magic Review
Connect with Suzy Callahan: BandCamp |
Suzy Callahan describes herself as a “post-punk poet and guitar hack. ” That sound has served her well over the years. Callahan’s songs have appeared in the TLC series Breaking Amish, has received airplay on KCRW, and have been featured on NPR. Her former band, Devils Wielding Scimitars, was chosen by some of Spotify DJ’s as the greatest band name, ever. Callahan is releasing a new seven track album titled, Magic. With acoustic guitars and a laid-back vibe throughout, Callahan shows a quieter softer side on Magic. The album was mixed by Floyd Reitsma at Studio Litho in Seattle.
Positives:
Callahan has an interesting lyric style that make her songs a joy to listen to and discover.
Bottom Line:
Magic is a collection of relaxed tunes filled with acoustic instruments and full vocal harmonies. Callahan’s vocal style is soft and intimate as she writes about the misconceptions of love and the thought of being on some kind of ‘island paradise,’ with something still missing from that pretty picture. With a singer/songwriter indie pop vibe, the seven tunes traverse multiple feels and emotions. The lyric writing is creative and poignant. Even though the indie pop vibe is strong, if you listen carefully you can still hear the attitude and experimental mindset of punk music’s influence throughout Magic. That’s the short of it!
