Sam Powell (AKA Sam Animal) is a Bristol, UK based singer, instrumentalist and songwriter.  Animal gained a degree in commercial songwriting and professional musicianship at BIMM. He is releasing his debut album titled, Powers on February 18, 2019. Together with Rufus Pollard, Kieta Bennetts, Patrick McKechnie and Taylor Wheeler, Animal is presenting fourteen tracks that are full of catchy melodies and well-penned lyrics. After returning from a long stint away traveling abroad, Animal found himself gardening in exchange for a bed at the Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury. The building is a very old and special place, its walls built in the sixteenth century and its foundations dating back to the thirteenth century. It is in the library of this house that Powers was created. Much like a bard from the Medieval era, Animals experiences and travels form the basis of his songs leading up to his arrival at the Abbey House. John Porter, producer of 13 Grammy Award Winning albums was at the helm.

Positives:

Animal has a gift for lyrics, combine that with well-written melodies through solid song forms with Animal’s unique voice, and you have something uniquely moving.

Bottom Line:

Animal is bringing his gift to a solid collection of styles and feels on Powers. The album was recorded over three days in the 16th Century library of the Abbey House. The recording is a well-balanced collection of sounds. The engineering on Powers is skillfully done by Ragner Reich and Patrick Mckechnick. “Lurch” has an energetic rock beat that Animal’s warm vocals convey with authority. Catchy guitar hooks float in the form to grab the listeners attention. The band is solid, and the production is clear and balanced. “Medicine” has a clean guitar riff that pulls from the seventies rock era. With interesting band hits and nice feel changes, the tune presents Animal’s creative lyrics. Animal has a catchy name and his music is equally memorable. Solid music, solid vocals and a solid band. It’s a lot of solid music contained on Powers. That’s the short of it!
