Kojo Easy Damptey is a Ghana born artist that brings elements of hip-hop, high-life, soul and funk into a musical landscape that infuses R&B and soul with a Afro-world flavor. Kojo focuses on music that brings a positive light to the world, especially in his lyrics. His debut album, Daylight, featured the likes of Canadian Winter, Sara London, Lee Reed and Mother Tareka. The record won Pop recording of the year at the 2015-Hamilton Music Awards. Kojo has a new album coming out titled, Giants. The album builds on the tradition of resistance and resilience that people of color around the world have shown in the fight to combat the ill effects of colonization. It will be released in the fall to celebrate the life of Amilcar Cabral one of Africa’s anti-colonial leaders. The album will feature fellow Ghanaian musicians Mutombo da Poet and WanLov the Kubolor. Other featured musicians on the album include Hip-Hop group Canadian Winter and Syrian born rapper Mother Tareka. Kojo is releasing a single from the album titled “Lonely Road.” The tune is the third single that Kojo has released from the album and it was written by Kojo Easy Damptey, Nasr Beny, and Chris Bruder. With a vibe that is all soul and R&B, with lyrics that enlighten and lift the people. That’s the short of it!

Positives:

Hip R&B, punctuated with soulful singing, but just as importantly, a message of truth and hope in the lyrics.

Bottom Line:

Kojo puts for a unique take to their brand of R&B. A welcoming sound that is full of character and hope. With a full horn section and dual guitars, set to a killin’ rhythm section. Vocalist Kojo and Nasr Beny sing the melody with inflections of the soul tradition. With a steady piano figure that activates the bassline and creates a slamming groove. The chorus has a large production feel and features horns. A hip horn section frames a relaxed trumpet solo to put the icing on this soul filled selection. Kojo is a Canadian that is using his Afro-soul music to remind us that we are all people of color, and any form of repression should be resisted with resilience.
