Joel Baker has an interesting background, the former Labour Party speechwriter turned, singer-songwriter, musician and producer was discovered by BBC Introducing Nottingham and key champion DJ Dean Jackson after sending his demos into the station in embossed parliamentary envelopes. How’s that for parliamentary treatment.  He has been championed by everyone from Dean to Huw Stephens, MistaJam, Jack Saunders and DJ Target, through to i-D and Clash, to Taylor Swift who included his single ‘No One In Heaven’ in her ‘Songs Taylor Loves’ Spotify playlist. Joel Baker is releasing his single and music video “What’s A Song” via Virgin EMI.Directed by longtime collaborator George Baxter, the video for the first track taken from his forthcoming debut album is a touching tribute to his mother.

Positives:

Baker has a distinctive voice that resonates with honestly. On “What’s A Song,” we are introduced to the introspective and heartfelt sincerity of his lyrics.

Bottom Line:

“What’s A Song,” began a couple of years ago as a heart wrenching break up song. With the loss of his mother, the song began to take on new life. Joined by father who also has a strong sense of meaning in his writing the two collaborated on the melding of Baker’s tune, and his father’s poetry for a stunning result. Baker explains, “For the video we wanted to explore different themes on what the song could mean. We decided to go down the route of grief. Sometimes grief can make us think that there's no hope left. That there's no point in carrying on. If they are gone, I may as well be too. The video explores the shadow that grief leaves in your life. Everywhere you go. Everything you see. There's a shadow that is cast even on the brightest of days.” The result is a mellifluous joining of two hearts feeling the loss of wife and mother. Baker is inspired and the visual of the video sends the message home with conviction, with compelling performances and lyrics that offer a depth of meaning. That’s the short of it!
