BAD is a NYC based duo comprised of Julia Brex and Jackson Hoffman. The two singer songwriters met in high school a developed a connection and have been writing and recording music together for over eight years. While they mainly focus on pop songwriting and production for other artists, the duet felt the urge to present their own music. Hence, BAD was formed less than a year ago. BAD’s concept was born out of a passion for funk music that is combined with elements from throwback funk and soul, 90’s and early 2000’s pop and R&B and contemporary pop and hip-hop. The duo express, “We essentially want to be what a Prince and Max Martin collaboration could have been!” BAD’s theme is to create an overall sense of fun, lightheartedness and self-empowerment, with the utmost desire to make people feel-good and move. BAD is now releasing an energetic single title, “Sweat.”
Positives:
Hip vocal harmonies, funky horn lines and a deep sense of groove and playfulness is a winning formula.
Bottom Line:
“Sweat” is presented with full production in a balanced and flowing manner that gives Brex’s solid vocals the space to shine. With a little bit of nostalgic sound that throws back to the eighties, BAD develops a song form that is entertaining and filled with musical gems. “Sweat” has a funk-inspired beat, stunning vocal harmonies, 80’s electronic instrumentation and exciting horn parts. The lyrics find inspiration from the 90’s workout Barbie aesthetic. BAD explains, “We tried to marry the humor of workout culture with sexual empowerment. It's not supposed to take itself too seriously. It has silly references like ‘bend, snap’ and ‘dry shampoo’ to keep it light.”. This is a feel-good track from a commanding duet that understands the power of rhythms and beautiful melodies. The counterpoint within the tune keeps things fresh, and with the vibrant production, each line can easily be enjoyed. Overall, this is a hip tune that will get you movin’ and that’s the short of it!
