Røgsignal is as band from Aarhus, Denmark that is making a mark in the Danish underground jazz community. Formed in 2011, the band has been producing music that is equally inspired by common musical references of jazz, electronic, pop, folk, classical and the members upbringing in the rough, windy nature of rural Jutland. Røgsignal is: Jakob Lauritsen – (Rhodes); Nikolaj Bugge – (guitar); Henrik Lauritsen – (bass); Jonas Møller Andreasen – (drums). The band first released two live-EP’s Live Et Sted I Jylland (Live Somewhere In Jutland) in 2014 and Live Et Andet Sted I Jylland (Live Somewhere Else In Jutland) in 2015, what was the early beginnings of the band’s unique sound. However, when Røgsignal released its full-length debut album Pletter På Solen (Sun Spots) in 2016, the Danish underground jazz community took notice. The album was very well received, and both national and international press praised the band for its original sound. The track “Safari” saw steady rotation on Danish National Radio (DR-P8 Jazz) and the band toured all over Denmark, including a couple of major festivals. The band continued touring in 2017 while also releasing a couple of music videos to accompany the album. The upcoming album produced and mixed in collaboration with Anders Boll (Lowly, Efterklang etc.) is being released through the bands own label, Danish Desert Records. Which is set to release in the Spring of 2018. Until then, Røgsignal is releasing their single “Answers.” Their sound is richer and captures the energy of the members creative modern sounding mix.
Positives:
A beautiful mix of electronics, acoustic instruments, post-production and playing that is both structured and improvisational, but always creative
Bottom Line:
“Answers” finds the ensemble experimenting with sound and building a group improvisation that is emotional and musical. The music develops, as each member enters and presents their musical statement. When the groove is established, the feel is a sixteen-note driven beat that allows Bugge and Lauritsen to play the melodies and harmonic colors over in sheets of pastels. The group music is melodic and explorative, while complex and expressive. Each member colorizes in a thoughtful manner for the overall success of the track.
