Renee Rosnes is a pianist and composer that is gained inspiration from painter Emily Carr for her new album, Beloved of the Sky. The album has an outstanding cast: saxophonist, flautist and clarinetist Chris Potter, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Lenny. Beloved of the Sky presents nine tracks that use the theme of beauty and wonder to be found in nature and Carr’s paintings are front and center in the thematic inspiration. Rosnes’ compositions are as creative as ever as well as her arrangements of other composers. The band is the best of the best, Potter is one of the most creative and musical players in the jazz scene. This date is no exception, his playing is amazing, although he can take it up a notch (surprisingly) when you see him live, so if you get a chance to see this band life, DO IT! That’s the short of it!
Positives:
Rosnes’ compositions are very creative and her ability to create sonic landscapes with this ensemble is percolated to perfection. The interaction between the band members is at a high level, creating a musical and enjoyable listen, they seem to be inspired by each other too.
Bottom Line:
There are up-tempo selections that create energy and urgency, as well as selections that are lyrical and filled with pastel colors. Rosnes is a force to be reckoned with as a composer and pianist. With the coherence of material and the communication between the band, Beloved of the Sky is a brilliant concept. A fine, creative, accessible modern jazz offering. Featuring great musicianship and fine compositions—you’ll want to get it!
