Pam Brennan is a New York vocalist that has sung: country, folk, pop, and rock, but her love for jazz standards is something that has been dear to her heart since childhood. Standards from the Great American Songbook are where Brennan’s diverse musical style and knowledge also allows her to vocal abilities to shine and convey her personality. Brennan’s first professional singing gig was in Japan, where Jazz is King, Queen, Mistress and Master. Later upon moving to New York City, Brennan spent over ten-years working with a trio in Cabaret, re-interpreting the Standards throughout the City in Japanese piano bars. In 2010 it was back to the 60s when Brennan teamed up with some other 60s heads to perform underplayed bands from that era such as: Moby Grape, The Zombies, Lulu, The Ronettes, and of course, the Fab 4. Her experience and professionalism gained by performing a wide variety of music in settings that demanded professionalism, musicianship and most of all, creativity, has allowed her to develop her own style. Brennan has released Moonglow, a collection of eleven jazz standards from the Great American Songbook that find Brennan’s clever phrasing and spot-on technicality conveying all the romance and dreams the music has to offer. This is creatively crafty standards done with style and passion. That’s the short of it!
Positives:
Every tune is a well-known standard that is done with style and musicality. Brennan’s voice is beautiful, and the band is top shelf.
Bottom Line:
Standards of course have been done many times, but it is in the hands of the interpreter that they become uniquely that artist’s vehicle of expression. Brennan’s voice is beautifully supple and agreeable, making for an easy on the ears listen. Her delivery is honest and very musical, and pays homage to the original melody, making for a delightful listen throughout. Together, Brennan and the ensemble make a journey through well-known standards a breezy delight. One worth going back to often.
