I Just Came From The Moon is a jazz quintet hailing from Aarhus, Denmark that brings to life jazz sounds that are just as creative and unusual as their namesake. The lineup consists of: Jonas Scheffler (trumpet), Nis Hellerøe Myrtue (tenor saxophone), Nikolaj Bugge (guitar), Tobias Andreassen (drums), and Frederik Hagner (bass). In 2016, the quintet won the Danish Young Jazz competition and in that same year, released their debut album, Hoax. I Just Came From The Moon is now releasing National Strangers Association, which is a three track EP. The tunes are a creative mix of jazz, pop, rock and classical. The tunes unfold organically and travel through many feels and harmonic colors. That’s the short of it!

Positives:

The quintet does an excellent job of building each composition. The writing and improvised lines seamlessly flow together as does the many feels.

Bottom Line:

I Just Came From The Moon is creating a beautiful blend of modern jazz that pulls from the American art form and the great European music tradition. As a result, the music is thematic, spontaneous and full of surprises. The quintet’s brass and reed front line allow for many colors, harmonized melodies and expanded solos. Add Bugge’s creative guitar parts that pull from jazz, rock and classical over Hagener’s and Andreassen’s grooves, and you have a reckoning that pushes full steam ahead. I Just Came From The Moon is an unabashed listen of a creatively cohesive adventure. One to savor many times over, especially for the adventurer within.
