Maddie & Tae, Everywhere I’m Going Review
The country duet of Maddie & Tae have been catching the ears of pop country fans since releasing their first single “Girl in a Country Song.” The duet is Madison Marlow and Taylor Dye, both write songs and together they create a unique vocal harmony that is wonderful to hear. The country star maker Big Machine Records picked the duet up in 2014 and in 2015 they released their debut album; Start Here. Maddie & Tae are building to their second full length album, but in a more pop manner. The album will be released as three EPs, the first of which was released in April of this year. Maddie & Tae are now releasing the second EP with a title of Everywhere I’m Going. Both EPs feature five songs. Produced by Jimmy Robbins and Derek Wells, the duet co-wrote all the songs together. The two also asked Dierks Bentley to come join them on “Lay Here With Me.”
The five songs on Everywhere I’m Going uses traditional instrumentation like mandolin and banjo along with contemporary sounds of distorted guitar and contemporary country drumming to build the pop country sound. Both Maddie and Tae have an authentic country sound to their singing style, phrasing and pronunciation. The title track has subtle pedal steel fills that converses with the two vocalists. The recording presents the vocalist in a balanced manner that keeps each voice audible, but still allows the two vocal lines to blend wonderfully.
The beat and feel is certainly influenced by the pop country genre, the tasteful distorted guitar lines are well-played and add to the song. “Lay Here With Me” brings the duet into a power trio format when Dierks Bentley joins the two female voices. Bentley’s lower registered range sits beautifully with Maddie and Tae. Even when singing in octaves, there is something special here. The vocal fills are another subtle addition. “Bathroom Floor” is a fun track that closes the EP, and perhaps the standout of the bunch. The song form has multiple feels and the acoustic instruments mix nicely with the electric sound of guitar and bass. The bridge has a nice call and response section. Overall, Maddie &Tae are continuing to build a song catalog and image that is uniquely theirs and holds the eyes, hearts and ears of many pop country fans. Everywhere I’m Going is going to expand that fan base for sure with its sincere songwriting and impassioned singing. Solid country pop with two beautiful vocalist that have an ear for songwriting. That’s the short of it!
(Verse)
Girl, I know
He done did a number on your soul
It sucks, it’s sad
I wish I could, but I can’t change that
But hey, good news
We’ve all been there a time or two
And one thing I’ve learned
Is it’s gonna be hard, but trust me girl
(Chorus)
Get up off the bathroom floor
Let’s wipe the tears off your cheeks
Put on a dress and get out that door
Girl, the first shot’s on me
Let’s jump into a cab downtown
Let a sexy man spin you around
Let’s show that heart some neon magic
‘Til we’re drunk and laughin’
Back on the bathroom floor
(Verse)
No, it ain’t your fault
He couldn’t see you’re beautiful? His loss
So put on your high heels
I bet you’re gonna love the way it feels
(Bridge)
So get up (Get up)
Come on, girl (Come on, girl)
Get up (Get up)
Come on, girl
Come on, girl
