Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road have released their next album with the sounds of authentic old-time bluegrass called, True Grass Again, on Pinecastle records. The album has eleven tracks and features several special guests. Affectionately known as the “Lady of Tradition” in bluegrass, Lorraine’s mandolin and vocals have fronted Carolina Road for over 15 years. The band’s distinct sound and old-time flair can be attributed to the bluegrass-rich area of North Carolina from which they hail. Carolina Road is: Ben Greene on banjo and bass vocals, Josh Goforth on fiddle and baritone vocals, Tommy Long on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Hooper on fiddle and Randy Graham on bass and vocal harmony. The magic of True Grass Again is based on brilliant instrumental playing and angelic vocal harmonies that are simply put, gorgeous. That’s the short of it!
Positives:
Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road still manage to invoke every bit of the tenderness and soul defining sounds of the tradition in a meaningful and musical manner. True Grass Again is a treat to listen to from its opening notes to the last moments of the album, there is no filler, just great tunes.
Bottom Line:
Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road keep the distinct old-time flair front and center as they wield the music through a gamut of originals and covers that cover many emotions and issues. Each lead vocalist is capably supported by a supporting cast of sensitive players, and the vocal harmony is crisp, clear and in tune. The band knows that virtuosity exists only to serve compositional needs rather than highlighting any one participant as a star and that results in an outstanding set of music. This unified approach sets True Grass Again apart, as an album that engages the listener and encourages repeat listening.
