It’s not often you think of San Francisco when considering country music artists. A quintessential ‘Country City Girl,’ Gayle Lynn was born and raised by the banks of the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky, which in truth is where her true country roots were born. Gayle Lynn formed the Hired Hands in 2005 with Rik Elswit (Dr. Hook) on guitars, Tom Drohan (Belle Monroe and Her Brewglass Boys) on stand-up bass and Corey Losee (The Shut-ins) behind the drums as an outlet for her folksy, roots-oriented songwriting. Recalling the Hired Hands’ formation, Gayle reminisces, “I don’t know how this happened; a bunch of awesome musicians playing my tunes and making them sound so beautiful. Now, these folks are my friends, family to me. What I know for sure is when we play we have fun, feel joy and are happy to be together.” The group has a brand-new album about to hit in the Spring titled, Twirl Back Home. They are releasing the first single called, “Beautiful Soul.”
Positives:
Lynn has a panache for lingering, soulful songs that resonate - whether channeling joy, loss, poignant memories or good ‘ol bourbon-soaked frivolity, her seasoned pen is expert at song-crafting.
Bottom Line:
An electric mix of Americana, roots, alt-country, folk and rock, with an absolute torch and twang. Lynn crafts meaningful storied songs that take the listener on a ride through the American landscape. From shimmering pedal steel to tastefully crafted guitar licks, including waltz and two-step feels, that all compliment Lynn’s honky tonk vocal style. Their impending album finds the band creating a sound all their own. Joined by Jon Mitguard on pedal steel, he adds the not-so typical country sound. Another feel good additive is guest Austin de Lone (Bill Kirchen, Nick Lowe) on piano, B-3 organ and Fender Rhodes. Lynn’s style is confessional yet guided by honied, catchy melodies. That’s the short of it!
