Skylark, Winter's Night Review 2

Skylark is a 12-voice ensemble that is a premier group of leading American vocal soloists, chamber musicians, and music educators. Based in the Boston area, the ensemble strives for the highest standard of repertoire and is a first-class vocal ensemble. Skylark announces their new release, Winter’s Night. A Christmas concert based around the music of Hugo Distler, with seven variations of the hymn Es ist ein Ros Entsprungen (Lo How a Rose E’er Blooming). The choice of the material around Distler’s music is a wonderful collection of rarely heard gems that the ensemble performs with stellar accuracy and emotion. That’s the short of it!

Positives:

Their performance will satisfy even the most discerning ear with their technical excellence and uniformly exceptional soloists featured on several selections. Winter’s Night is a serenely beautiful album for the Christmas season and is a distinctive set of eighteen tracks.

Bottom Line:

Winter’s Night has brilliant soloists and the ensemble singing is seamless in color, blending and clarity. Skylark has created a wonderful Christmas album; this ensemble is able to achieve a balance of sound that is simply wonderful. It is sheer bliss to experience choral music expressed with the highest degree of artistry and excellence. Each track is superbly done, and any fan of vocal ensembles will find this album delightful and a must have!
