The master Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes is back with another outstanding release titled, Chopin Ballades & Nocturnes. At the beginning of this year we reviewed his album Sibelius (click here to read the review), which was full of Andsnes’ powerful insight, commanding technique and musical interpretations of the composer’s piano works. Now Andsnes plays Frédéric Chopin’s Ballades 2, 3 and 4. Anything that Andsnes touches he brings a deep understanding, maturity and lyrical musicality to.  His playing and interpretative sensibilities are of such a high caliber, it is simply astonishing. Chopin’s compositions tell a musical tale that is epic, with subtle developments and themes that traverse the piece, Andsnes brings all these subtitles to the forefront with emotion and passion. This is musical storytelling by a master composer interpreted by a masterful performer. That’s the short of it!

Positives:

Andsnes’ understanding of the arching connectivity of Chopin’s music is at heart the success of this project. He brings out the depth of the emotions and with his flawless technique and lyrical touch, each passage comes to life in an inspiring lyrical manner.

Bottom Line:

Leif Ove Andsnes brings out the subtle passion and lyrical qualities of Chopin on the album, Chopin Ballades & Nocturnes. When it comes to phrasing and tonal articulation, Andsnes is superb. It is interesting to hear how he shapes his preferences among these well-known pieces. His touch and ability to color a phrase with emotions is second to none. He brings out the singing quality of a percussive instrument. Andsnes is all about beauty, warmth and balance, both in his playing and in his overall concept of shaping an album. Supremely excellent!
