Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser are a Croatian duo that is called, 2CELLOS. Together the two cellists have been creating a catalog of musical adventures that combine the world of classical with the well-known melodies of the rock, pop and movie soundtracks. “We’ve always said we want to break down pre-conceptions about the cello and the boundaries around musical genres,” says 2CELLOS about the range of styles included in their repertoire. The duet is releasing an album titled, Let There Be Cello. Co-produced by Sulic and Hauser, as well as Filip Vidovic. Known for their electric live performances, 2CELLOS is now gearing up to take their newest album on the road for their first-ever U.S. arena tour, which is set to kick off February 2019. Let There Be Cello showcases the duet’s brilliant aptitude for crafting and reinventing music of any genre into a stunning display of virtuosity through the lens of classical techniques and agility. That’s the short of it!
Positives:
The album has an outstanding reach of material, including pop hits ("Perfect" by Ed Sheeran, "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi) to rock anthems ("Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes, "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor), from celebrated classics ("Imagine" by John Lennon, "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen) to never-before-heard originals ("Concept2," "Cadenza"). Let There Be Cello takes classical instrumentation to new heights for a listening experience unlike any other.
Bottom Line:
2CELLOS is a celebration of the beauty of the cello as an instrument. The cello’s voice has always been celebrated throughout the Classical music canon, and now 2CELLOS is proving that with imagination, the cello has a contemporary voice that is just as powerful. Along with the fourteen tracks on Let There Be Cello, 2CELLOS has also unveiled a video for their rendition of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Directed by Kristijan Burlovic, 2CELLOS take viewers on a high seas adventure, performing the much-loved theme on a massive ship while decked out in full pirate gear. Filmed in Dubrovnik, the ship's flags pay homage to the duo's roots, showcasing the love and pride both Luka and Stjepan share for their homeland and its history. The duet transforms the music into an experience that is exciting and brilliant. Wonderfully recorded, the nuances come through on each track to allow the excellent arrangements, compositions and brilliance of performance shine through. Simply put, it’s amazing!
