Jane Lee Hooker Spiritus Review 2

Jane Lee Hooker is back with their second rock-blues album titled, Spiritus.  A five-piece blues group, of all females that call themselves Jane Lee Hooker. The name might be a new name to you, by no means are they new to the game. Between the five members, they have decades of experience playing, recording, and touring, both nationally and internationally. The group started when guitarists Hightop and T-Bone honed their love of blazing dual leads in Helldorado in the 90s. From there, Hightop joined Nashville Pussy, T-Bone joined Bad Wizard, and both women toured the world. But when their time with those bands ended, they realized they really missed the rush of trading guitar solos with one another, so they recruited Hail Mary, who played bass with Hightop in the punk band the Wives. Cool Whip got the drum chair and the icing on the cake was singer Dana `Danger` Athens. The new album brings the bands writing abilities front and center with 8 originals, filled out with two covers.  The music was recorded live with no overdubs, but plenty of energy and blues/rock attitude. That’s the short of it!

Positives:

Energetic blues-hued tunes that have attitude and will keep you listening from start to finish. No nonsense here, just good music and belting vocals with dueling guitars, what else could one ask for?

Bottom Line:

These ladies are smokin’. They grab their parts by the collar and throw it around, each member brings all their soul to each track to deliver powerful, soulful and attitude drenched parts that make a whole lotta kickass music. Concise guitar playing and powerful vocals, these 10 tracks bring a whole lotta’ brashness to the contemporary blues sound. Athens really works her vocal parts, producing a powerful, rockier edge, but still very soulful. A good listen that will keep your blues a rockin’.
