Consistently delivering authentic soul and blues through a catalog of seventeen albums, CDs, and DVDs is vocalist Billy Price. The Baltimore based singer first grab the attention of blues fans with his three-year association with guitarist Roy Buchanan, which Price did two LPs with, That’s What I’m Here For and Live Stock. In April 2016, Price was officially recognized and inducted as a Pittsburgh Rock ’n Roll Legend. Price’s album This Time for Real, with the late Chicago soul singer Otis Clay, received a 2016 Blues Music Award in the category of Best Soul Blues Album of 2015. His 2018 album, Reckoning, produced by Kid Andersen at Greaseland Studios, was nominated for a 2019 Blues Music Award in the category of Best Soul Blues Album of 2018. His new album Dog Eat Dog, also produced by Andersen, is a mixture of originals and covers that span twelve tracks and finds Price singing with passion and soulful clarity.

Positives:

The songwriting is solid; the covers are well done with creative arrangements and the band is kicking!

Bottom Line:

Dog Eat Dog is well-recorded and produced, allowing Price to do what he does best and that is deliver a soulful melody with his unique timbre and style. The album has wonderful background singers, fun solos and guest appearances by Rick Estrin, Alabama Mike, and Mike Zito. Highlights include: “Working On Your Chain Gang,” Bobby Byrd’s “We’re In Love,” the title track, “Dog Eat Dog,” and “All Night Long Café.” Mike Zito performs an outstanding guitar solo on “All Night Long Café.” Also, throughout the album Kid Andersen delivers first-rate guitar solos and fills. Rick Estrin adds deep sounds of the blues with his soulful harmonica playing and Eric Spaulding’s saxophone solos are spot on. The biggest reward throughout the twelve tracks are certainly Price and his singing. His style and tone is instantly recognizable and he brings the multiple feels and melodies to life. This is the real deal and that’s the short of it!
