Katherine Penfold Review: Keep Christmas with You 2

Nova Scotia born, Vancouver based singer/songwriter Katherine Penfold swings and sways on her new album of holiday classics, titled Keep Christmas With You. The ten-song project includes great interpretations of Christmas classics with a touch of modernity, as well as pieces destined to become new classics such as, “This Christmas” (Donny Hathaway) and the title track “Keep Christmas With You,” from Sesame Street. Penfold presents us enjoyable jazz infused Christmas classics for our sheer enjoyment. Her singing is full of passion and the arrangements are inventive and have little music surprises that will keep your ears in good cheer. The album has strong singing and wonderful playing. It is sweet to the ear and will add to the festivities of Christmas. So, that’s the short of it!

Positives:

The arrangements are the showstopper here, fresh and full of musical surprises. From subtle re-harmonizations, added harmonic twists, or fun with time signatures, Keep Christmas with You has it all. Penfold’s singing is a combination of jazz gone by and modern inflections. Webb and Kaldestad are a real joy to listen to and will keep you smiling with musical cheer.

Bottom Line:

A fun collection of Christmas tunes that have been arranged and sung with care. When you play this album, people will be singing and smiling all through the house, even the mouse. The band is swinging and Penfold’s voice will bring good cheers to your ears.
