Alt-rock band Under the Rug is as versatile as their name, which was derived from the commercial building they work in located in Los Angeles, CA. An unmarked building except for a small home-made sign that reads: “Rugs.” Step inside and it’s a full-scale recording studio. Under The Rug is Casey Dayan (lead vocals, guitar); Sean Campbell (vocals/guitar); Jesse Holsapple (bass/vocals) and Brendan McQueeney (drums and percussion). Their debut LP, Pale Kings is set for release in February of 2019. It’s a 10-song album loosely based on a novel by David Foster Wallace of the same name. Until that time, we can enjoy several singles including: “Three-Legged Dog,” “Sarah’s Daydream in the Kitchen,” “A Serial Killer Comes Home, which was surprisingly recorded at Airbnbs across California. They also released two studio-produced singles, “Song For My Friends,” and “The Neighbor’s Dog.” That’s the short of It!
Positives:
Strong falsetto singing and a catchy melody that is sounded by a shifting feel that will keep you listening. Great guitar work and a rock solid rhythm section with a hip song form!
Bottom Line:
“A Serial Killer Comes Home We” might be an unusual song title, but one that is an effective and truthfully addictive melody. The group was inspired to write the song after a 3-day booking at Airbnb in Lake Elsinore, which is an area not necessarily known for its environs. Dayan came up with the idea of doing a looking-up-style song from the perspective of a serial killer. “You know, a really good day for a serial killer. Halloween was just around the corner, so we figured, Why not?” says Dayan. The tune traverses many moods, as one could imagine a serial killer having moments of unhinged behavior and moments of whist in between the madness. The companion video is just as compelling. Lake Elsinore could not have been a more perfect setting for this video, already on the map with a long history of criminal behavior, in fact just last August there was a triple-murder case called the Lake Elsinore Killings. Or the infamous Bill Lee Suff dubbed as the Elisnore Killer who took is confirmed to have killed 12 sex workers from 1974–1992 and rumored to of potentially killed up to 22. Under the Rug has created a compelling single and video with “A Serial Killer Comes Home.” Like a superb horror flick, you just can’t stop watching or listening. A great effort both cinematically and musically.
