The Cold Stares is a hard-rocking, southern-rock inspired band that is built around catchy riffs, solid vocals and big sounding drums. Upon hearing The Cold Stares, you might be surprised to learn that the band is a duet comprised of guitarists/vocalist Chris Tapps and Brian Mullin on drums. The Cold Stares will be releasing a string of EPs through the fall of 2019, with each creating a full collective LP, WAYS, releasing on October 18, 2019 and containing thirteen tracks.
Positives:
Big crunchy guitar sounds, and booming drums drive this classic rock tune strafing to you ears memory.
Bottom Line:
“Any Way The Wind Blows” opens with a powerful riff that has elements of Southern -Rock mixed with a little Led. The vocals have just the right amount of grit to match the attitude and energy that the guitar and drums are laying down. With a well-structured song form, “Any Way The Wind Blows” keeps things moving and entertaining. The bridge has another excellent riff that builds to the last tine through the form. “White Girl” continues in the same vein, but with a little funky spice added. The guitar riff is a beautiful mix of movement and space. Mullin’s drums fill the space with a deep rock groove. Tapps spanks the wah-wah to good effect for his solo. “Headstone Blues” slows things down a little to a slow simmer, here we can hear a little Allman Brothers Band influence. Both musicians keep the sonic stage full and turn in a solid performance. Overall, Tapps’ vocals are moody and fit the vibe perfectly. Solid sounds from two musicians that know how to project their sound and energy to create a bigger than life sonic experience. That’s the short of it!
