Provo, UT based Folk/Rock group Michael Barrow & The Tourists released their debut album, Juneau, in May 2017. The album was mixed and mastered by Chicago native Brian Zieske, who produced the breakthrough records for both The Hush Sound and The Academy Is in the early 2000’s. The band’s next full-length album is due out later in 2019. The band’s first single off the album, “Sweet Honey,” is now release for us to get a sweet taste of things to come. A roots rock pleaser that offers a retro vibe.
Positives:
Blues infused folkish lyrics that are downhome, with a catchy chorus and plenty of soul.
Bottom Line:
“Sweet Honey” is replete with soulful vocals, memorable lyrics and that southern sensibility akin to Black Crows, but with the edges polished and a bit of folkish blues injected in for that sweet honeycomb flavoring. The single deals with the age of story of pining for a lover, making it completely accessible to listeners. An added organ solo gives the cut just the right amount of old-fashioned soul that stick to your bones with greasy, greasy licks. I dare you not to get this song stuck in your head. That’s the short of it!
