Max Hull is a guitarist and composer based in the DC/Maryland/Virginia (USA) music scene. Hull has been active in the scene and has played lead guitar with several rock cover bands in the area. However, Hull has also been concentrating on meticulously cultivating his own unique sound by focusing on instrumental music. Hull released his debut EP titled Passed Time last year, which featured five original instrumental metal tracks.  Created entirely in Hull’s basement studio, he wrote the songs and performed and recorded all the instrumentation. Hull also did all the mixing, editing the final product and mastering. Hull is now releasing a single titled “Constellations,” an instrumental progressive metal track that is energetic and full of colorful sounds and playing.

Positives:

Hull’s composition has interesting transitions and textures throughout the form.

Bottom Line:

"Constellations" is an instrumental progressive metal composition that was written and performed by Hull with mixing and mastering support from Eric Taft. Hull's songwriting, performances, and engineering is impressive, as he is only sixteen years old. Hull has a loyal Instagram fan base (12.8K and growing @maxhullmusic) and the single is accompanied by a guitar play-through video. One of the things that caught our ears with Hull is he has a nice balance of sounds and keeps the focused in a consistent harmonic color. Also, he keeps things heavy, even though the textures and densities change in the song, you still always get a nice full sound that screams progressive metal, which is very cool! Hull displays a wide range of guitar techniques and his execution is solid. The production is full and balanced. The bridge has a nice open section that really lets you hear Hull’s playing and his personality on the guitar. There is plenty of counterpoint within the track to keep things interesting. As Hull’s experiences progress, so will the development of melodies that sing. Hull is one to watch in his journey to instrumental/shred fans hearts. The key is conveying “heart” while walking a fine line between hip memorable band sounds and delivering memorable melodic statements. That’s the short of it!
