Cleveland Indie/Alternative artist Holden Laurence, also a member of local Indie-rock band The Modern Electric, released his debut album, Wild Empty Promises in 2017. On Wild Empty Promises, Holden built on the foundations of early alternative by combining elements of Mope-rock (The Cure), Post-punk (The Smiths), and New Wave (Echo & the Bunnymen) with Americana (Ryan Adams) and Modern Alternative (The Killers). Vintage synths, chorus-laden guitars, and steady grooves highlight an expansive sound that complements his vulnerable and vivid songwriting. Now , Laurence is releasing the first single, “Shadows of Old Love” from his up-coming album, Rewire (releasing May 10, 2019).
Positives:
A vintage 80s new-wave sound, his brand of modern-post-punk-rock blends in heavy hooks and heartfelt lyrics.
Bottom Line:
Its nice to see hook oriented melodies creeping back into our music market again. “Shadows of Old Love,” offers beautifully crafted melodies with enigmatic backing vocals and swirling 80s guitar sounds and synths. Written and produced by Laurence, who also played bass, guitar, synths and sang with Michael O'Brien playing drums and percussion. The music is well-written with forms and melodies that are both striking and have a clear balanced flow. Laurence touches on the side of rock that is based in memorable songwriting and pop memorability, fashioned in a rock sleeve. “Shadows of Old Love,” ticks all the boxes of solid songwriting with unforgettable hooks. That’s the short of it!
