Gin Blossoms, Mixed Reality Review 2

Mixed Reality is a brand-new album from one of the most successful melodic alternative rock bands still making music today, Gin Blossoms. The Blossoms have had their ups and downs, but have consistently created great songs, and believe it or not, they celebrated their 25-year anniversary of their seminal 1992 multi-platinum album New Miserable Experience. The band has compiled fifteen new songs for Mixed Reality, which was produced by Don Dixon and engineered by Mitch Easter. The songs are excellent, cover a wide range of emotion and are full of the melodic sounds, which is what we all love about Gin Blossoms. The album celebrates where the band is as songwriters and band mates, with Wilson, Leen, Johnson and Valenzuela all contributing material. Mixed Reality is their first new album in almost eight years and brings music that is the next level for the Gin Blossoms, think New Miserable Experience on steroids. Everything is more in focus and the playing and singing is even better! That’s the short of it!

Positives:

Gin Blossoms have kept the alternative rock sounds and put just enough polish on it to highlight a refined sound, keeping the edge and rawness that makes alt-rock so special. Great songs, nice vocal harmonies and excellent singing and playing throughout all fifteen tracks.

Bottom Line:

Gin Blossoms have found a new level of refinement on Mixed Reality, with just a hint of power pop, the group brings a set that has pinch of daring in it, but never loses focus on their overall band sound and great songwriting. Mixed Reality I predict will rank among the group's most notable albums, chalk-full of memorable melodies, and hook oriented choruses that become the soundtrack in our lives. The album's overall beauty is in its songwriting and the chemistry between the band members is significantly matured and seasoned. Nice variety of tempos and feels, with The Blossoms turning out some of their most unforgettable melodies and lyrics to date, oh and more guitar! Yep, its true I said it.
