Chloe Lilac, 19 Review
Chloe Lilac is an American singer and songwriter known widely for her strong songwriting skills in the Alternative/Indie rock/pop genre. Lilac is native to Brooklyn, New York City, and began her musical journey at the age of eight in a rock band as a singer and songwriter. Though young, Lilac is just now nineteen; she has a mature and confessional lyric style that embraces her generation and beyond. By putting her heart out there, she has amassed an impressive following. Her single “Summer” was enjoyed by more than 10 million streams on Spotify and her previous self-released single “Stolen Liquor” hit #1 on Hype Machine. After signing to RCA Records, Lilac released her debut EP Manic Pixie Dream with her sophomore EP entitled DOUCHEBAG following in August 2020 (read our review HERE). Lilac is back with another gem from her musical diary called “19.” “19” follows the release of her first single of 2021, “10 Things,” a bold return for the budding artist that was accompanied by an official knockout video. [section label=”Bottom Line”]Bottom Line: “19” is the latest release from Lilac’s upcoming new mixtape, due out November 19, which was produced by Rory Andrew (Machine Gun Kelly, ODESZA, Jaden Smith, Goldlink, Two Door Cinema Club). “19” is a solid alternative rock scrutiny of the state of the world today by a perceptive nineteen-year-old. Lilac explains, “I wrote 19 about how scary everything’s gotten in the last two years. I really sat and thought about the state of the world and how weird and out of control everything’s become since the pandemic. I want to stress how grateful I am for my physical health and my family’s health; I’ve been very blessed throughout the pandemic thus far. There’s just so much loss that’s been happening and still happening. It’s really intense, especially being witness to all the tragedy at what seems like the beginning of my adult life.” Lilac tapped into her DIY roots to self-direct and self-shoot the official videos in her Brooklyn home, where she created all the art and video footage. The footage was edited by Alex Dekelbaum. A steadily strummed guitar greets us for an introduction. Lilac’s poignant lyrics and embracing timbre assure us that this song is something worth listening to. The song builds on clever variations, subtle backing vocals, catchy melody, well-written lyrics, and Lilac’s expressive singing. A fantastic guitar interlude and solo is a musical climax, and it takes us to the break-down section before the reframe. The fragileness of Lilac’s singing in the reframe is terrific. Overall, “19” shows Lilac’s vocal abilities have the power to crate moods, textures, and variations that make “19” stand out. The lyrics are emotive, and the instruments are supportive and add to the song’s flow. That’s the short of it!
