Growing up in New Zealand to Dutch parents, Bruno Merz found ways to support his passion of guitar by travelling through France working on farms for food and pocket money, until he eventually found his way to Amsterdam. Once in Amsterdam, he worked a number of odd jobs and recorded his first album of demos written during his travels, titled Through Darkness into Day. As he performed out more and more the word quickly began to spread and the opportunity to perform more often took what was once a hobby into something more concrete. He recorded his first EP. Departing from Crowds in 2009. Followed by a Full-length album Highways, released in 2014. His single “Emmeline” was a launching point for Merz who received millions plays on Spotify in the months to following. Not content to linger, he composed music for a 40-minute children’s ballet for Northern Ballet, and other compositions for dance. Merz moved to Canada in 2018 after living in the UK for 10 years, which he currently calls home. His latest single “Eleven Mile Creek,” released on November 29, 2018. That’s the short of it!
Positives:
Merz has a haunting voice, the notes drip from his lips with a sincerity that penetrates your bones and warms your ears.
Bottom Line:
“Eleven Mile Creek,” is an acoustic song that has a driving guitar sound, augmented by effected electric guitar, yearning harmonies and elongated lines that linger in your mind. Merz voice is hauntingly reminiscent to Chris Isaak. Likewise, “Eleven Mile Creek,” has a similarity to “Wicked Game.” In that Merz is measured in his delivery and has a sensuality about his voice that resonates deeply.
