Steph Wells aka SUMif, is a singer and songwriter that focuses on making pop music with deep themes of exploring gender and sexual fluidity in her lyrics, videos and performances. SUMif started her musical journey in New York City while studying music business at NYU. After graduation, Wells packed up and headed to the songwriting mecca of Nashville. Wells still felt she could express herself in a bigger way, so she traded in her acoustic guitar for midi controllers and moved San Francisco. That transition gave her the opportunity to make a name for herself. SUMif’s debut EP, Pretty Cage soon followed and was met with industry praise, released earlier this year it received glowing praise. While the music is undoubtedly uplifting electro-pop, SUMif’s journey as a young queer female artist allows this energetic writer, producer and performer to express herself openly and inspire others. The talented triple threat is releasing a new single titled “Undone.” Her soft warm voice is surrounded by electro-pop sonics, as she builds the song settings and unfolds her story. That’s the short of it!

Positives:

SUMif’s songwriting has a traditional feel in its presentation of form and she knows how to clearly define the melody sections with feels and instrumentation development.

Bottom Line:

SUMif is spinning out another uplifting electro-pop track that is filled with crafty-songwriting and a catchy melody. The form develops to a medium tempo beat that has offers dance elements. With robust backgrounds that float in to add interest, and with varying feel changes, she keeps things fresh and interesting. A solid single “Undone,” is a welcomed listen from a defined artist making her mark.
