Sam Ostler, Shine Review
Sam Ostler is a singer and songwriter based in the United Kingdom. Ostler’s music puts an emphasis on melody and drawing out emotions of the listener. Musically, Ostler cites Elton John, U2, Take That and Celine Dion as major influences and his grasp of writing and an ear for writing catchy pop melodies are the result. With songs ranging from piano and vocal ballads to huge full-band rockers, Ostler’s output is varied and always reaching for fresh sounds. Extensive touring (including a successful headline show at the O2 Academy) and two well received EPs are growing Ostler’s reputation and fan base. He has the almost unprecedented achievement of having every song from his Debut EP played on National BBC radio, and the great support from the stations continues. Ostler is now releasing a single titled “Shine.”

Positives:
Solid songwriting and productions are throughout this tune.
Bottom Line:
“Shine” brings a varied song form and orchestration to a tune with solid pop sensibilities. With a rolling drum figure, Ostler opens the song with a catchy vocalized melody. The dramatic opening is offset by an intimate verse of only Ostler’s breathy vocals and piano. The chorus is big and uses the same rolling drum pattern that is now filled with the sounds of a full band. Ostler’s use of subtle vocal harmonies is a nice touch and adds to the colors. The bridge is again presented with only piano and voice. The variances in orchestration lends to a sense of drama and gives an enjoyable shape to the form. Ostler is writing attractive pop melodies that will certainly brighten any playlist. That’s the short of it!
