Emily James is a 21-year-old singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. James grew up in New York, spending her youth immersed in the diverse culture the city had to offer. Drawn to songwriting at an early age, she began writing her own music when she was 10 years old, inspired by such timeless musical influences as Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, and Adele. James spent two years in Nashville before making a move to Los Angeles. She released her self-written, self-titled EP in 2016 with Grammy-winning producers Jacquire King (Kings of Leon) and Ian Fitchuk (Kacey Musgraves). A year-and-a-half later, at eighteen years of age, James released her debut album, Til the Morningwritten by James and produced by Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Vance Joy). In 2019, she released Dreaming, all the music was written and produced by James. 2020 brings us new music from James, with singles “bartender,” “kissing boys,” and now, “what do i.”

[section label=”Positives”] Positives:  “What do i” is built around a beautiful melody and well-written heartfelt lyrics. The many layers that James creates in her music are always fabulous.

[section label=”Bottom Line”] Bottom Line:  On James’ latest single, “what do I,” she writes lyrics that convey feelings of unresolved emotions and unanswered questions. The sentiments come from imagining the moment you see a former love for the first time, post-breakup. James collaborators, Paris Carney and Mike Pappas, help expresses the music and emotions. James’ singing and delivery of the lyrics convey the sentiments of apprehension through a passionate internal narrative. With an intimate piano accompaniment that is augmented by soft colorations of synths and vocal harmonies, the music fits the mood of the lyrics. The second time through the form a soft drumbeat is added. James always builds interest with her vocal harmony layers. Her vocal timbre is a blend of pop and country, pulling the best qualities from both genres. A solid songwriter, James has a gift for song and writing. That’s the short of it!
