Positives:
Dr. Rubberfunk is deep in the groove. His songs have style, interesting forms and solid production.
Bottom Line:
My Life at 45 (Part 3) begins with the track “A Matter of Time,” which features the solid singing skills of Izo FitzRoy. The track is filled with R&B and soul sounds, from Dr. Rubberfunk’s drum playing to hip vocal background harmonies. The honesty of the lyrics combined with a well-composed melody that is intricately produced results in a good listen. Dr. Rubberfunk’s hands-on approach both in front of and behind the mixing desk, have earned him a well-deserved reputation for being a name synonymous with quality. “A Matter of Time” has a classic soul groove as the form takes us through the various feels with nice guitar fills spicing up things along the way. The bluesy “Slim‘s Mood” finds the Rubberfunk band stretching their legs over a driving soul jazz feel that is a must for fans of “Boogaloo Joe” Jones and Grant Green. The production is balanced and the guitar playing is soulful. This EP has a lot of substance for only containing three tunes. My Life at 45 (Part 3) brings to life the power of deep groove that speaks from the heart. That’s the short of it!
