Bringing us sounds from down under, the Melbourne Australia based quartet that call themselves, The Clunk Orchestra have released their debut album titled, The Sound It Makes. The members are: Ron Anderson on tenor, alto, soprano saxophone, Geoff Spooner on guitar, Ben Harmsen on bass, and Marek Podstawek on drums and percussion. “The name of this band is The Clunk Orchestra because that’s the sound it makes in front of an audience,” is saxophonist Anderson’s explanation and that is also the inspiration for the title of the album, The Sound It Makes. The Clunk Orchestra performs eight original instrumental tracks that have a wide range of feels, tempos and styles and all performed live in the studio on this recording for that high energy group sound. Their music is fun to listen to and one can easily feel the energy and joy that the four have together, which transmits to the music. An awesome fusion of jazz/rock/funk and good feelings, that’s the short of it!
Positives:
Nicely composed songs with musical improvisations and good band chemistry.
Bottom Line:
The Clunk Orchestra is a quartet that blends the styles of jazz, rock and funk in a way that has peaks and valleys in all the right places. Each member performs great individually and as a whole, they let the music build to a groove funk sound that is tasty. The music will certainly be a must for all fusion fans, but with their infectious grooves and top shelf musicianship, The Clunk Orchestra has a little summin’ for everyone. The band plays with style types, time signatures and flowing compositional forms. The music is enjoyable and always in focus, so The Sound It Makes? Good! A set of great summer soundtracks that are captivating, performed by a quartet that plays with appetite and musicality.
