Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone and Lewis & Clarke’s Lou Rogai come together on a collaborative holiday tune “Gathering Song,” both inspired by their love of both Dark Americana and British Folk. All wrapped up into their collaborative name of Cedar Sparks. In November 2018, Carbone and Rogai began tracking the song at Mixolydian Studios with Don Sternacker in the mixing seat in their hometown of Delaware Water Gap, PA. Joining the effort is Julian Rogai on double bass, Damian Calcagne on keys, Jeff Barg on drums with a guest appearance by Regina Sayles on vocals.
Positives:
A pillar of the explorative nature of folk, dealing with the pensive and at times depression emotions that can set in with the holiday spirit for some, the group tackles the delicate subject with beauty and a crystalline melody that uplifts.
Bottom Line:
“Gathering Song” in an age of inclusion steps forward with its bid as a holiday anthem of community and togetherness. Rogai and Carbone had a deliberate approach with this holiday single. They discussed the materialistic commodity of Christmas and how it can for many, add up to seasonal depression. Through their music and the inspiration of the 1946 film It’s A Wonderful Life and the plight of George Bailey, the group focused on lyrics and music that most everyone could relate to. Musically the song does not disappoint, themes aside the song is rousing and uplifting and gives an alternate look at the holiday from a different perspective. Just released on December 14, 2018, it’s a must add to your holiday soiree or even a sandwich with a friend. However the mood strikes you best. Again, its all about inclusion. That's the short of it!
